Juniors

The future of bowls depends on us attracting more people to play our sport, particularly young people. At Darra we try to encourage all young people to come and try the game. To facilitate this we have a number of Bowls Australia qualified and accredited Coaches as well as equipment suitable for younger bowlers including small sized bowls.

Dekota and Taylor

Below is a small piece written by one of our members Taylor, who started with us as an 11 year old with no bowls background. Sine that time he has represented the club in a number of events including the Gr8 and Pennants competition as well as playing Singles in the Queensland Championships.

The number of juniors playing lawn bowls across QLD in the past 12 months is phenomenal. Some people might think lawn bowls is an old people’s game, but you’re wrong! Lawn bowls is for everyone no matter what you age.

Lawn bowls helps promote co-ordination, control and strategic thinking, while also teaching patience and endurance of the mind.  We always make sure that everyone, no matter what their ability, gets a game. When people progress in the game they will be given the chance to represent the club in Pennants which is a completion where play against other clubs with in our District. It runs for 10 weeks and is played every Saturday.  We also play the Gr8s which is another interclub competition but this competition is against clubs from other Districts.

Queensland has their own state juniors team which is full of the best players of the game? Our club (Darra Bowls Club), has one of our own players in the Queensland juniors team – Dekota Brindle.  Dekota started playing lawn bowls at the age 13 after being sucked into the game by her dad. Dekota used to enjoy playing netball. She is most proud of herself for making the state juniors for Queensland explaining, “I want a young kid to see me and feel encouraged to follow in my footsteps.” Through Dekota’s time at the club she has had mentors that have help her overcome challenges and fears.

Darra Cementco is one of the best clubs because they provide juniors with great coaches who understand kids and support them on and off the green. This is important because every child needs someone to support them and be willing to give up their time to help another person succeed. They provide a sense of belonging and friendship to help your child grow in confidence. Our coaches have had experience across all levels of competition and many different sports.

It is a fantastic club because it provides kids with role models who will treat them respectfully. Our coaches show children the skills of the game and volunteer their time to help children be successful on the green. The club is full of members who are willing to help and promote the junior game. So why don’t you come down to Darra and have a go.
